About 1Read
Literacy is a concern across the country- especially among preteens and teens. The Southern Kentucky Book Fest partners would like to encourage this age group to be a part of our community’s reading project just for them- 1READ.
The title chosen this year is Hattie Big Sky by author Kirby Larson. 1READ encourages all local middle school students to read the same book at the same time so they can all be prepared to discuss it with each other.
Hattie Big Sky follows the adventures of Hattie Brooks, who tires of being shuttled from one relative to another and decides to leave Iowa to travel to Montana where her late uncle has a homestead claim. Hassles with cattle, bad weather and other challenges surface for the girl in her quest to discover the true meaning of home.
Hattie Big Sky was selected as a 2007 Newberry Honor Book and School Library Journal named it a Best Book of the Year. Free books were given away at kickoff events in the area. Author Kirby Larson will visit middle schools October 15 and 16 to discuss her book and celebrate Teen Read Week.
1READ is a partnership project of WKU Libraries, Bowling Green Public Library, and Barnes and Noble Booksellers. |
